sermonette: Whatever Happened To Gnosticism?

Knowledge Falsely So Called
David C. Grabbe
Given 06-May-06; Tape #773s

Description: David Grabbe warns about a dangerous resurgence of the ancient heresy of Gnosticism finding its way into the media through movies and books such as The Gospel of Judas and The Gospel of Thomas, both works emphasizing secret knowledge or new insights concerning the dualism of the flesh and spirit, suggesting that every person has a spark of the divine within, imprisoned in the flesh (an immortal soul). Both spurious gospels encourage new insights which contradict the teachings of the rest of the Bible, condemning prayer, fasting, and charity. Gnosticism, an ancient enemy of Christianity, soundly condemned by the Apostle Paul and the Apostle John has again spread its tentacles across major religions, including Christianity and Judaism. A popular secret Gnostic text endorsed by many pop stars having questionable lifestyles is the Kabbala, having alleged secret insights into the Torah. Gnosticism is alive and well and just as much a threat to faith and overcoming as it was in the first century. We need to counter Gnosticism with the truth of Jesus Christ and the love for God.
